    ///வேதம் என்பது இயற்கையுடன் ஒன்றிய ஒரு விஞ்ஞானம். ///

    மிகச் சரியான வரிகள்.இந்தப் பதிவில் வேத சம்பந்தமாக அருமையான தகவல்களை தந்திருக்கிறீர்கள் மிக்க நன்றி.

    ///அடுத்த வருடம் திருச்சூரில் நடக்கப் போகும் அந்த ஹோமத்திலும் ஆராய்ச்சிகள் நடக்கப் போகின்றன. ///

    இதைப் போன்ற இந்துமத வேத- மந்திர,ஹோம, ஆராய்ச்சிகள் சம்பந்தமான தகவல்களை முடிந்தால் ஒரு கட்டுரையாக எழுதவும்.

    ///வேதம் என்பது படித்துப் பொருள் சொல்ல அல்ல.
    அது கதைப் புத்தகமும் அல்ல.
    அது சரித்திரப் புத்தகமும் அல்ல, அதிலிருந்து நம் சரித்திரத்தைத் தெரிந்து கொள்ள.///

    ஆனால் வேதம் இதைத் தான் சொல்கிறது என்று மாக்ஸ்முல்லர் போன்றோர்கள் பிதற்றும்போது அதை சரிபார்க்க நாம் வேதத்தின் பொருளை தெரிந்து கொள்ளவேண்டிய அவசியம் ஏற்ப்படுகிறதல்லவா?

      “ஓதப்படுதலும் வேண்டும் என்பதே வேதத்தின் ஆதார பயன். இந்த மந்திரங்களில் இந்திரன், வருணன், சூரியன், அக்கினி என்று பல பெயர்களும் வரும். அர்த்தம் என்று பார்த்தால் பல இடங்களிலும் கோர்வையாக அர்த்தம் இருக்காது. அங்கே அர்த்தத்துக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் இல்லை. ஓசை நயமோ, அதிர்வலைகளோ அல்லது அது போன்ற வேறு எதற்கோ தான் முக்கியத்துவம் இருக்கிறது. இந்து மதத்தை வழி நடத்திச் சென்ற மூன்று ஆச்சர்ய புருஷர்களும் வேதத்தை எழுதி, அதற்குப் பொருள் சொல்லவில்லை. இதை நாம் நினைவில் வைக்க வேண்டும்”.

      ஏன் எனலில் வேதம் ஒலிக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் தருவது போல அதன் அர்த்தத்திற்கும் முக்கியத்துவம் கொண்டுள்ளது என்பது தான் மிக முக்கியம். தஞ்சை மஹால் வெளியீட்டில் உள்ள, திரு. ராவ் அவர்களால் தமிழிலும் ஆங்கிலத்திலும் மொழி பெயர்க்கப் பட்ட புத்தகத்தை வாங்கி படித்தால் வேதமந்திரங்களின் சுருக்கமான அர்த்தம் தெரிய வரும்.

      வேதம் என்பதே ஒரு மொழி என்பது பழமைக் கருத்து, இன்றைய மொழி ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்களும் ஒத்துக் கொள்ளும் கருத்து. அது ஒலி வடிவில் அமைந்துள்ளது. அதன் ஒலி அமைப்பைக் கொண்டு தமிழ் எழுத்துக்களின் ஒலி, மாத்திரை, உச்சரிக்கும் விதம் ஆகியவற்றை அறிந்து கொள்ளலாம் என்று தொல்காப்பியமே கூறுகிறது.

      உதாரணத்துக்குச் சொல்ல வேண்டும் என்றால் கணினி மொழியை மொழி பெயர்க்க முயல்வது எவ்வளவு அபத்தமோ அது போலவே வேதத்தை மொழி பெயர்ப்பதும். ஆங்காங்கே நமக்குப் பரிச்சயமான சொற்கள் இருக்கவே அதை மொழி பெயர்க்க முயன்றாலும், (மாக்ஸ் முல்லர் செய்தது), அந்தச் சொற்கள் பரவலாகக் காணப்படும் புராணங்கள் போன்ற பிற நூல்களிலும் அவை எவ்வாறு சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளன என்று ஆராயாமல், பொருள் கூறுவது தவறு.

      உதாரணாமாக ரிக் வேதத்தில் வரும் ‘பஞ்ச மானவர்கள்’ யார் என்பதை பிற நூல்கள் தரும் விவரங்களை அறியாமல் அல்லது அவற்றை ஒதுக்கி விட்டு, ஆரிய- திராவிடர்கள் என்கிறார்களே, இதைப் போல அபத்தமான புரிமானம் வேறு எதுவும் இல்லை.

      தங்களின் கூற்று சரியானதல்ல. ஏன் எனில், கணினி மொழி என்பது, ஒரு மொழியை மாற்றுப்படுத்தப் பட்ட சங்கேத மொழிஉரு ஆகும்.அதை பேச (ஒலியாக்க) முடியாது. ஆனால் வேதம் அவ்வாறல்ல. வேதத்தை விளக்க வந்தவையே உபநிடதங்களாகும். மேலும், வேதத்தில் ஒலிக்கு முக்கத்துவம் உண்டு என்பதை மறுக்க இயலாதது போல, அதற்கு அர்த்தம் உண்டு என்பதும் அவ்வாறே.

      உதாரணமாக, வேதத்தில் வரும் ஸ்ரீசுக்தம் என்பது மஹாலக்ஷ்மி குறித்து செல்லப்பட்டதை எடுத்துக் கொண்டால், அது(வேதம்) அர்த்தம் உடையதும் என்பது விளங்கும் என்பது என் தாழ்மையான அபிப்ராயம். அதுவே உண்மையும் கூட. எனவே, எழுதாக்கிளவியான வேதம் பொருளற்றது இல்லை என்பது துணிபு.

    4. வேதத்தை எதனுடனும் ஒப்பீடு செய்ய முடியாது. கணினி மொழி என்பதை புரிந்து கொள்வதற்காகச் சொல்லப்பட்ட உவமையே.

      வேதத்துக்கு அர்த்தம் இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் யாரும் வேதத்தை மொழி பெயர்க்கவில்லை என்பது உண்மை. அது எழுதாக் கிளவி என்றே தமிழ் நூல்களிலும் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளது. எழுதாக் கிளவி என்றாலே எழுதப்படக்கூடாதது என்றாகிறது. எழுதினால்தான் அத்ற்குப் பொருள் தேட முடியும். எழுதிப் பொருள் சொல்லக்கூடாததற்குப் பொருள் கண்டு பிடிக்கவேதான் ஆரிய - திராவிடப் போர் என்னும் அனர்த்தங்கள் எழுந்து விட்டன. அது எழுதப்படக்கூடாதது.

      எழுதவில்லை என்றாலும், அவற்றின் பொருளை அறியும் சக்தி சாதாரணா மானிடனுக்குக் கிடையாது.வேதங்களின் பொருளை உபநிஷதங்கள் மூலமாவோ, ரிஷிகள், ஆசாரியர்கள் உபதேசமாகவோ தான் அறியலாம். எழுதி வைத்துப் படித்துப் பொருள் சொல்லக்கூடுபவை அல்ல அவை.

      ஸ்ரீ சூக்தத்தையே எடுத்துக் கொண்டால், அதன் மொழி புரிபடலாம். ஆனால் அதன் உட்கிடையான பொருளை அறியும் சக்தி, படித்துப் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடிபவர்களுக்குக் கிடையாது. அவை தியானத்தினாலும் வேதாந்த ஆராய்ச்சியாலுமே அறிந்து கொள்ளக்கூடியவை. பிரம்ம சூத்திரத்தின் முதல் ஸ்லோகத்துக்கு, ஆதி சங்கரரும், ராமானுஜரும் கொடுத்த வியாக்கியானததைப் படிக்கவும்.

      காலத்தின் கோலம் சூக்தங்களை எழுதி, பொருள் கண்டு கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். புருஷ சூக்தத்தை எப்படி நாசம் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்று நான் எழுதிய கட்டுரையை இங்கே படிக்கலாம்.

      அவற்றுக்குப் பொருள் அல்லது மொழி பெயர்ப்பு செய்தால், உண்மையான பொருளும் மொழி பெயர்ப்பும் கிடைக்காது என்பதே நிதர்சனம். அதனால் தானோ என்னவோ, வேதத்தை எழுதவோ, பொருள் காணவோ இல்லை. ஆசார்ய புருஷர்களே செய்யாததை, ஏன் நாம் / மற்றவர் செய்ய வேண்டும்?

      மேலும் எழுதாக் கிளவியான வேதம் பொருளற்றது என்று சொல்லவில்லை. ஆனால் பொருளுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டு, அவற்றைப் பயன் படுத்தும் முறை வேறானது என்பதை ஒத்துக் கொள்வோம்.

      ஆதிசங்கரருக்கும், இராமானுஜருக்கும் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு தேவையில்லை. அவர்கள் இரு(பல)மொழிப் பண்டிதர்கள்.

      பீஜாக்ஷ்ஷரங்கள் அதிகம் கலந்த வேதத்தில், ஒலிக்குறைபாடு என்பது ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளப்படாது என்பதால்தான் (அதற்கும் சில விலக்குகள் அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது)அதை நேரிடையாக செல்லாதவர்களும் அதன் ஒலியை மட்டும் கேட்பதாலேயே அவர்களுக்கு அதன் பயன் கிட்டும் என்றும், அதன் (வேததின்) அர்த்தம் தெரிந்து செய்யும் போது அது மேலும் சிறப்பான் பலனையும், அதன் சிறப்பை அறிவதால் அதில் ஈடுபாடு மேலும் அதிகமாகும் என்பது உணர்ந்தோரின் தெளிபு. அதனால் வேதம் அர்த்தமற்ற ஒலிச் சந்தமே என்பது சரியான கருத்து அல்ல என்பதே உண்மை.

      ஸ்ரீசூக்தம் தெரிந்தவர், மேற்கண்டவாறு எழுதியிருப்பது வியப்புக்குரியது, வருத்தத்துக்குரியது. ஆதி சங்கரருக்கும், இராமானுஜருக்கும் இவை எதுவுமே தேவையில்லை. அவர்கள் நமக்காக, மக்கள் நன்மைக்காக எழுதி வைத்தார்கள். பலவற்றுக்கும் உரை எழுதின அவர்கள், வேதத்துக்கு உரை எழுதவில்லை. எழுத முடியாது. எழுத மாட்டார்கள். விவரம் தெரிந்தவர் எவருமே வேதத்துக்கு உரையோ, மொழி பெயர்ப்போ செய்ய மாட்டார்கள். காரணம் வேதம் என்பது எழுதாதக் கிளவி. எழுதாத மொழி. அதை எழுதி வைத்தால்தான், மொழி பெயர்ப்பு, உரை என்னும் அவசியங்கள் எழும். அதை ஓதி, ஓதித்தான், அதில் இலயித்து, அது காட்டும் பிரம்மனில் ஒடுங்கி, வேதம் இதைச் சொல்கிறது என்று உபதேசம் செய்தார்கள். அப்படி வந்த உபதேசங்களில் ஒன்றுதான் உபநிஷதங்கள். அப்படி அறிந்ததைத்தான் சங்கரரும், இராமானுஜரும் தங்களது பாஷ்யங்களில் வேதாந்த சாரமாகப் பிழிந்து கொடுத்தார்கள். வேதத்துக்கு உரை எழுதாத இராமானுஜர், வேத சாரத்தை “வேதார்த்த சங்கிரகமாகத்” தந்தருளினார். எந்த கேள்விக்கும் அதில் பதில் இருக்கிறது. அந்தப் பதில்களுக்கு அடிப்படை வேதம் தான். வேதத்தின் அர்த்தத்தை இப்படிப்பட்ட நூல்கள், உபதேசங்கள் மூலமாகத்தான் அறிய முடியும்.

      இந்தக் கட்டுரையை நீங்கள் சரியாகப் படித்தீர்களா என்பதே சந்தேகமாக இருக்கிறது. இந்தக் கருத்தை இவ்வாறு சொல்லியிருக்கிறேன்:-

      ”வேதம் சொல்லும் கருத்து என்னவென்று அறிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்றால், தவம் செய்தவர்களையும், ரிஷிகளையும், ஞானிகளையும் நாடிச் சென்று அவர்களிடமிருந்து அறிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். அப்படி எழுந்தது உபநிஷத்துக்கள். வேதம் சொல்லும் ஞானத்தை உபநிஷத்துக்கள் மூலமாகத் தான் அறிய முடியும். அப்படித்தான் அறிந்தனர்.”

      இந்தக் கட்டுரையின் முக்கிய நோக்கம், வேதம் ஒரு சரித்திரப் புத்தகம் அல்ல என்பது. வேதத்தை எழுதி வைத்துப் பொருள் சொல்லவில்லை என்பது. வேதத்துக்கு முதலில் பொருள் கூறி உரை எழுதியவர் 14 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சேர்ந்த சாயனாச்சாரியார் என்பவர். அவர் எழுதினதைத்தான் மாக்ஸ் முல்லர் மொழி பெயர்த்து கந்தல் கூளமாக்கி விட்டார். இது ஒன்றே போதும், வேதம் மொழி பெயர்க்கப்பட்டு, உரை எழுதக்கூடாது என்பதற்குச் சாட்சி.

    7. வேதத்தின் அர்த்தம் தெரிந்து சொல்ல வேண்டும் என்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறீர்கள். அந்த அர்த்தம் என்ன? அது அவ்வளவு எளிதில் புரிந்து கொள்ளக் கூடியதா? அந்த அர்த்தத்தை எப்படித் தெரிந்து கொண்டார்கள் என்பது உங்களுக்குத் தெரியுமா?

      வேதத்துக்குப் பொருள் எழுதினால்,வேதம் பயப்படும் என்று வேத வியாசர், மஹாபாரதத்தின் முதல் அத்தியாயத்தில் கூறுகிறார். வேதத்திற்கு எளிதில் பொருள் காண முடியாது. அறைகுறையாக வேதம் தெரிந்தவர்கள் தப்பும், தவறுமாகப் பொருள் சொல்லிவிடுவார்கள் என்று வேதம் பயப்படுகிறாதாம். அதனால் இதிஹாச, புராணங்களைக் கொண்டு வேதக் கருத்தை அறிய வேண்டும் என்கிறார் வியாசர்.

(” The Veda should be amplified and supported by the Ithihasas and Puranas because the Veda is afraid of him who has little learning that he would do it wrong" Mahabharata - 1.1.264)

    9. From Sri Ramanuja's commentary to the first sutra of Brahma (Vedantha) Sutras:-

He starts with the age ( 8 years) for one to start learning Vedas. The time of beginning of that learning is stipulated as the Full moon of Aavani or Puttaasi. The Vedic learning so started must continue for four and a half months. In such an young age, knowing the meaning of the passage to be learned is impossible. So he says,

" Thus it is understood that learning the Vedas turns out to be the mental reception of a collection of syllables and consists in their recitation by the teacher followed by the after-recitation (of the pupil) who is in the habit of observing special preparatory and purifactory ceremonies and restrictions, and who has been initiated by a teacher born of noble lineage accustomed to pious observations, possessed of spiritual qualities and also having a thorough knowledge of the Vedas. "

அவரது வார்த்தைகளில் “ And again because in the way of a mere repetition etc, they form even as they are verbally, the means of accomplishing these objects of human pursuit. Thus the injunction as to learning the Vedas finally comes to mean a mere mental reception of a collection of syllables, after (reciting) certain mantras and (obeying) certain regulations.

“Having discovered Him, let him (pupil) practice knowledge" (Brhadaaranyaka upanishad 4-21)

"Having dsicovered Him, let him know" (Chandogya upanishad 3-12-6)

Vedic Chanting – a Perfectly Formulated Oral Tradition --

      Dr. S. YEGNASUBRAMANIAN

      http://www.svbf.org/journal/vol1no2/chanting.pdf

Our tradition believes that the Vedas are the breath of God Himself!

With that belief, our Rishis exercised enormous care to preserve the Vedas in its original form without the infiltration of any errors. Especially in the absence of writing, and through only an oral transmission from father-to- son or teacher-to-disciple, for thousands of years, this is an accomplishment of unimaginable proportion! Considering the vast magnitude of mantras contained in the vedas, such a preservation, with built-in safeguards, is mind boggling!

It is believed that the complete benefit of Veda mantras could be achieved only when the following conditions are met:
¨ Correct pronunciation of letters (words)
¨ Correct duration for utterance of letters (words) – and,
      ¨ Correct intonation of letters,

Our Rishis prescribed several fool-proof methods to correctly recite the veda mantras.

Six ways of recitation were considered incorrect and they are :

One who chants in a sing-song fashion , who chants fast , who nods his head up and down without actually raising or
lowering the pitch , who reads from a book , who chants without knowing the meaning , and who chants in a feeble voice , are considered incorrect .

They believed that altering the pitch even (without any change in words and duration), might lead to diametrically opposite effects, as related in the story of Vrtra who, instead of killing Indra, got killed by Indra by just a change in the intonation alone of the mantras chanted by Vrtra’s father, Tvashta.

The rules of correct pronunciation and articulation of sounds are given in the Vedanga, known as Seeksha. Seeksha deals with varNa (letters), svara: (pitch); [there are essentially three svaras, namely, anudatta (gravely accented or low pitched), udatta (high pitched or acutely accented), svarita (circumflexly accented)] maatraa (duration – a prosodial unit of time); balam (strength or force of articulation); saama (uniformity); and santaana: (continuity) during recitation.

    13. Our ancestors devised unique methods to protect and maintain the basic Veda mantras in its original form through various patterns and combinations of recitation. The basic mantra is called vakya or samhita paatha which is a full sentence.
Splitting them word by word is known as pada paatha , which gives the knowledge of each word to the student.

Next is krama paatha , where the first word of the mantra is added to the second, the second to the third and so on, until the
whole mantra is completed. This method enables the student not only to know individual words but also how to combine words in recitation and the changes in svara that occur as a result of such combination.

Both Pada and Krama methods of chanting retain the natural order of words of the samhita paatha and so, are known as prakrti or natural. For example, if we take sentence consisting of six words a-b-c-d-e-f, in samhita paatha, it will be chanted as six separate words a, b, c, d, e and f in pada paatha will be recited as a-b, b-c, c-d, d-e, and e-f in krama paatha. Actually, a reciter proficient in chanting in the krama format is honored as a kramavit !

In addition, they devised eight other combinations which do not follow the natural order, and are known as vikriti or
artificial order. The vikritis are given in the following verse: They are, jataa, maalaa, sikhaa, rekhaa, dhwaja, danda, ratha and ghana.

Among these only jataa and ghana are prevalent (or, only !) practices in the Krishna Yajur Veda which is mostly predominant in the South. In Sukla Yajur Veda, which is mostly predominant in Banaras and in the North, (the Madhyandina and Kanva schools) all the eight vikritis were practiced.

However, today, there may not be any scholars at all who might know all these vikritis Jataa (braid) paatha In the above example, the six words in the line, when chanted in the jataa format becomes, a-b-b-a-a-b; b-c-c-b-b-c; c-d-d-c-c-d; d-e-ed-d-e; e-f-f-e-e-f and so on. As can be seen, the forward-reverseforward arrangement of words resemble the way ladies braid their hair, and so this practice of chanting is termed jataa!

    14. Two types of maalaa (garland) exist: a)krama maalaa and b) pushpa maalaa.

This is simialr to krama paatha in that two-word units with the characteristic overlapping are the foundation. sikhaa
(top knot) is similar to jataa except that, instead of two words being repeated forwards and backwards, three words are linked.
Recitations in rekhaa (row), dhwaja (flag), dand (staff), and ratha (chariot) are more complex and the reader can refer to Wayne Howard [2] for details.

Mention can be made here that there are three of ratha, namely, dvipaada (two wheels), tripaada (three wheels) and catuspaada (4 wheels). Each wheel corresponds to a quarter verse (paada) of the text. Among these, dvipaada catuspaada varieties are the ratha types most widely cultivated today.

      Ghana (bell) paatha
This is one of the most popular format of recitations and requires years of learning and practice by the student. A scholar proficient in recitation in this format is honored as a ghana paathi . Here the arrangement of words take the shape of a bell.
For example, the group of words a-b-c-d-e-f mentioned earlier, when chanted in the ghana format will be, a-b-b-a-a-b-c-c-b-a-a-bc; b-c-c-b-b-c-d-d-c-b-b-d; and so on.

The earliar illustration of six words, when written in ghana format will appear as follows:
Please note that, what was originally six words in the samhita, evolve in to about sixty words in the ghana format – a ten fold
increase in this case – that gives an idea of how complex the chanting can become with larger sections of the mantras !! We can
now appreciate the rigor a ghana pathi has to go through in his education to learn, by heart, the thousands of mantras, to be able to recite in ghana format.

Our Rishis devised all these elaborate and complicated system of chanting in order to preserve the purity of the sound, word,
pronunciation, intonation , pitch and sound combination of the veda mantras which are the foundation for our sanaatana dharma itself.

Also, repetition of words in many ways, the correct tally of words was also maintained which ensured the purity. They also believed that higher merits (punya) accompany greater complexities in chanting – for example, a ghana recitation is several orders higher in merit than jataa recitation, which is higher in merit than krama recitation and so on.

Wayne Howard [2] noted in the preface of his book, "Vedic Recitation in Varanasi", "The four Vedas (Rg, Yajur, Sama and
Atharva) are not "books" in the usual sense, though within the past hundred years each veda has appeared in several printed editions. They are comprised rather of tonally accented verses and hypnotic, abstruse melodies whose proper realizations demand oral instead of visual transmission. They are robbed of their essence when transferred to paper, for without the human element the innumerable nuances and fine intonations – inseparable and necessary components of all four compilations - are lost completely. The ultimate authority in Vedic matters is never the printed page but rather the few members … who are today keeping the centuries-old traditions alive."

It is unfortunate that there is very little subscription to this education these days and it is an important duty of all of us to
ensure that this education is encouraged and adequate support is given to promote and propagate it.

"The Vedas, divided into three divisions, ultimately reveal the living entity as pure spirit soul. The Vedic seers and mantras, however, deal in esoteric terms, and I [Krishna] also am pleased by such confidential descriptions.

The transcendental sound of the Vedas is very difficult to comprehend and manifests on different levels within the prana, senses and mind. This Vedic sound is unlimited, very deep and unfathomable, just like the ocean.

As the unlimited, unchanging and omnipotent Personality of Godhead dwelling within all living beings, I personally establish the Vedic sound vibration in the form of omkara within all living entities. It is thus perceived subtly, just like a single strand of fiber on a lotus stalk.

Just as a spider brings forth from its heart its web and emits it through its mouth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead manifests Himself as the reverberating primeval vital air, comprising all sacred Vedic meters and full of transcendental pleasure.

Thus the Lord, from the ethereal sky of His heart, creates the great and limitless Vedic sound by the agency of His mind, which conceives of variegated sounds such as the sparsas.

The Vedic sound branches out in thousands of directions, adorned with the different letters expanded from the syllable om: the consonants, vowels, sibilants and semivowels.

The Veda is then elaborated by many verbal varieties, expressed in different meters, each having four more syllables than the previous one. Ultimately the Lord again withdraws His manifestation of Vedic sound within Himself. The Vedic meters are Gayatri, Usnik, Anustup, Brhati, Pankti, Tristup, Jagati, Aticchanda, Atyasti, Atijagati and Ativirat.

In the entire world no one but Me actually understands the confidential purpose of Vedic knowledge.

Thus people do not know what the Vedas are actually prescribing in the ritualistic injunctions of karma-kanda, or what object is actually being indicated in the formulas of worship found in the upasana-kanda, or that which is elaborately discussed through various hypotheses in the jnana-kanda section of the Vedas."

this is utterly false. All verses in rigveda are grouped under various rishis and either the verses were created by the rishis or were taken up by the rishis.

This is similar to the sangam literature in tamil where each song is attributed a author. similarly each verse in rigveda is attributed to a rishi, though he might have authored it or adopted it for his own usage.

    ஏனென்றால் தியானத்திலும், தவத்திலும் அமிழும் போது தானாகவே அவர்கள் வாயில் புறப்பட்ட சொற்களே வேதம் ஆயிற்று. அவற்றை ஓதும் போது, இயற்கை முதல் இறைவன் வரை அனைத்துமே ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டன.

This is again an utter lie. The verses in Rig veda clearly mean something for the persons who are aware of Vedic sanskrit or chandasa language and they were not just sounds. They are proper verses in proper language meaning something. but gradually the meaning lost importance and the ritual took prominence.

    ஆனால் அந்த ஓதுதல் சுய நலத்துக்ககச்க் செய்யப்படவில்லை. உலக நலனுக்காகவும், மக்கள் நலனுக்காகவும் வேதம் ஓதப்பட்டது.

Hmm. anyone who reads the verses in rigveda will know that Majority of the verses

    [1] ask for more cattle
[2] ask help for detroying enemy, whoever that may be.

All these were asked by the Rig vedic rishis only for themselves to prosper and for their benefactor to prosper.

If you take a work like Thirukural, we never find the author asking for materialistic benefits for himself.
But in rig veda we always find the rigvedic rishis asking for materialistic benefits.

    அதன் பொருள் அறிந்து அதை ஆராய்ச்சி செய்வது என்பது ஹிந்து மரபில் கிடையாது.

here you contradict your previous statement that in hinduism there is no tradition of understanding vedas.

    வேதம் ஓதுதலும், கட்டுப்பாடான தவ வாழ்கை மேற்கொள்ளுதலும், ஆத்ம ஞானம் தேடுவதற்கு உதவியது. லௌகீக விஷயங்களுக்கு அவை தேவை இல்லை.

If you have ever read Rig veda and understood the meaning of hte verses in it, all that you find is Rig vedic rishis asking for more materialistic benefits like more cattle, more wins in battle etc.

    வேதமே எழுதாத கல்வி.

    போரும், அதில் வெற்றியும் பற்றி இருந்தால் இந்த சேனாதிபதி அதைக் கேட்டுத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளாமல் இருந்திருப்பானா?

Rig veda was written in Vedic sanskrit and even by the time of Panini, vedic sanskrit had gone out of usage and panini created classical sanskrit by his work. So all the information given about rigveda by indians was just hearsay and the typical indian mentality of glorifying things.

    அவர்களுக்கு இந்திய சரித்திரம் வேண்டுமென்றால், புராண இதிகாசங்களை நாடி இருக்க வேண்டும்.

If you very much believein the goodness of veda, it should stand the test of time and stand the test of scrutiny.

you cannot hide it from scrutiny and say that its best piece of work ever written.

If you want to gloat about it, let it stand the test of scrutiny.

    நல்லவன் கையில் வேதம் அமிர்தம்.
    அதுவே சுயநலமிக்க வல்லவன் கையில் ஒரு அம்பாகி விடுகிறது.

hmm. why other works like upanishads, thirukural, all other sanskrit literature didnt become a plaything of the colonials ?

There is no question of whether I believe it or not. This is the basis of Vedic Homas. Everything upto the level of reaching Swarga can be attained through Vedic Homas. Even in Tamil we have the instance of Paalai - Gothamar reaching Swarga along with his wife after doing Jyothishtomena yajna. This sangam poet had sung the paalai p paadalkal in Kalith thogai. He also sang in praise of the Cheran king, Palyaanai-ch- shel kezu kuttuvan which is compiled as the 3rd ten of PathiRRup patthu. In return for those songs, the king asked him what he wanted. Gothamanaar replied that he must arrange for the yajna to help him and his wife attain Swarga. Conceding that request the king spent for the conduction of that special yajna at the conclusion of which Paalai Gothamanar and his wife ascended to Swarga. There are verses to this effect in sangam literature and by Munrurai araiyanaar in Pazhamozhi.
However once the effect of that yajna is over, the persons have be born on earth. That is why Jnana khanda of Vedas insist on going beyond result oriented mentality. The ultimate aim of life is to escape from rebirth and this can happen only by mediating on Brahman, the Supreme deity glorified by Rik Vedas and worshiped through homas in Yajur Veda and by singing in Sama Veda.

Vedas are known as Apaurusheya, meaning not authored by any man. It is the flow of Supreme God existent in nature. Rishis have grasped them and spoken out in their supreme level of meditation. (I want you to read all the articles in this series before making comments like this that merit no attention. But I decided to answer them so that anyone having similar notions can get clarity. )
I asked you to read the series, because of particular importance to this comment of yours, is the episode on valmiki explained in the series. He was unlettered but he found astonished to hear the words of poetic Sanskrit filled with multiple levels of meanings coming out of his mouth. This became possible because he was transformed into a higher level of mental faculty through meditation and austerity. What he uttered in that fashion is nothing but Ramayana, praised as Adhi Kavya. Similar transformation happening to rishis, resulted in the out-pour of Vedas from their mouth.
In this situation, there is no personal effort to compose. It just poured out as if in trance. The information they gave in this fashion is also not their own making. It is all about Nature’s way and existence for which they can not claim authorship. To explain this with an example, Newton gave the law of Gravity. But Gravity is not his own making. It is there in nature, and he grasped it and gave in a definition form. Similarly Vedas are truths found in Nature and in existence which the rishis grasped and spoke out. They don’t claim themselves as having formed those truths.
You told about sangam poems. They were conceived by poets and therefore given in their names. In the case of Vedas, they were given by ‘seers’. This word in English is formed from ‘Drushta’ ( seeing) done by rishis, They saw the Truth of Existence of the Supreme Brahma n and hence they are known as seers. What they ‘saw’ in mediation and inwardly, they gave. The mantras are formed in this way which comes along with the name of a rishi. But it must be known that there are mantras or hymns for which several rishis are mentioned as mantra karthas (creator of that mantra). This can become possible only in the case of Natural Truths which many rishis during different periods of time had conceived, contemplated and encapsulated them. This is possible when Vedas are eternal truths which can be grasped by several persons. It is like how we have various theories of Gravity and Atom authored by several scientists. But all those theories are existent in Nature and not a creation of man. Same with Vedas.

Explained in previous comments by quoting Paalai Gothamanaar. Everything is saadhyam (possible) under the sun. Vedas give mankind the ways the attain all that is possible under the sun. It also gives ways to attain swarga also. It is because people crave for material things and pleasures. Only after they shed that craving, they can move towards seeking things of mental and spiritual nature.
You must be aware of Maslow’s hierarchy of wants. Google search and find out. The common human nature is to crave for material things thinking that one gets happiness form them. Once he gets satisfied or fed up with that, he will move towards other wants expecting happiness from them.

Vedas cater to all these because it is about Nature and the Supreme Self that encompasses everything. The Karma khanda of Vedas cater to the human wants . Once the human mind accepts the non-permanence of happiness from material accomplishments, the person moves to Jnana khanda. We call it as Vedantha (the final conclusion of Vedas) which is encapsulated in Brahma Sutras.

The final conclusion of Vedas is that attainment of the Brahma is the supreme goal of life and a state of bliss. This is the ultimate spiritual goal of life. Any Vedic Rishi who had been the mantra drushtas had only concentrated on Supreme Brahman and attained spiritual accomplishment. They did not possess wealth nor led a material life. Read 3rd and 4th chapter of Bhagavad Gita to know the yajnas. One can not understand the yajnas by reading Vedas. Read the texts like Gita to understand them.

You have chosen to compare Thirukkural. If I start writing on Thiurukkural, it will be as big as this series and all the talks of you and your ilk will be thrashed. So let me stick to the precise answer. Thirukkural is not Vedas. (Not all Vedas are material seeking). It is a Dharma sastra. The Vedic concepts of four purusharthas namely Dharma (aram), artha (poruL) , kaama (inbam) and Moksha (veedu) are explained in that. The fourth concept is not written as a distinct part, because adherence to the first three would automatically get one to Moksha. Moksha or veedu is the result of the first three. In that sense Thirukkural also is a result-based text which tells you how to be dharmic in personal (aram), social (porul) and private (inbam) life and behaviour so that the ultimate goal of Moksha is attained. Read Manu smrithi and you will know how Thirukkural is a Tamilised version of it.

You may understand parts of it but you need a commentary to understand the exact meaning. Like wise there are many texts for which you need a commentary to understand. Vedas are far ahead of these texts in content and formation. But you don’t want to follow a commentary to understand Vedas. You want to read them by yourself and find out the meaning. Will it work?

This is the problem in reading Vedas as a text and finding meaning. The unwritten Vedas when written on paper loses its meaning. As an example I will a simple mantra. You know many mantras are there which are all formed with some codes, formations, meter and meanings. One of the shortest mantras is Rama mantra. “Rama” is a mantra. The rishis advised Ratnakar (Valmiki’s name when he was a robber) to sit in a place and keep reciting “Mara” continuously. In sankrit it is read in the reverse. Mara is read as Rama. But The rishis wanted him to recite it as Mara. They didn’t say the meaning. Now I ask you to recite ‘mara mara mara mara......’ continuously and see where you give the stress. Now recite “rama rama rama rama.....” continuously and see where you give the stress. There is a difference if you sincerely and honestly recite and check. There lies the secret of how the benefit of a mantra or a Vedic hymn arises.

By reciting mara mara mara, Valmiki attained an exalted state by which he was able to effortlessly pour out Ramayana. He did not know nor study Sanskrit grammar to write Ramayana. It just poured out in that state.

The Rama mantra can be written in numeral form as 25. That 25 contains in itself 25 secrets of Nature which was all encapsulated in Rama’s story. Ramayana is therefore regarded as the Vedas themselves. Such is the way the Vedic mantras and hymns function and not the way you think.

(An additional news to you is that Thiruvalluvar was a Rama Bhakth and used numerals 108 and 25 for his Thirukkural. Aram + porul has 108 kurals - the number for japa / recitals and 25 (numeral for Rama) for Inbaththup paal. The 2nd verse of Inbaththup paal depicts Rama-Sita eye contact which Kamban also expressed. The deity encapsulated in the first word of Thirukkural (as per sutras on poetry) is Rama. The A-kaaram mentioned in the first word is the name that Krishna identified himself in Gita. The letter 'a' written in Tamil means number 8 which signifies ashtakshara mantra (Om namo Narayanaya))

You would have heard about Ganapaadi. There are some Brahmins who are Ganapadigal. They are experts in Ghana recital of Vedas. It takes 13 full years to gain expertise in Ghana recital of one vedam. They take a single line of the Veda and recite it in specific formations for specific number of times by splitting it in different ways. If you try to translate them, you will get a different meaning for the same line recited in separate combinations.

To give you an example let me quote from Agniveer:-

Note: The ninth break here and the last break are the results of a technicality which you may ignore, unless you want to specialise in this art.

There is no break anywhere else. The hyphens shown are for requirements of those who can decipher the grammar ; they will not be reflected in the recital.

The significant point to note here is that in Sanskrit the order of words does not matter.
If you do it with an English sentence like:
      Rama vanquished Ravana
      It will go like this:
Rama vanquished vanquished Rama Rama vanquished Ravana ‘Ravana vanquished Rama’ Rama vanquished Ravana … and so on.
You can see the absurdity now. In Sanskrit this absurdity would not arise.

      (end quote)

It is precisely this. You can not construct the meaning of the Sanskrit verses as they appear. You need an expert to tell what it means. Even the term Pashu –which you translate as Cattle does not always mean that.

Rig veda was written in Vedic sanskrit and even by the time of Panini, vedic sanskrit had gone out of usage and panini created classical sanskrit by his work. So all the information given about rigveda by indians was just hearsay and the typical indian mentality of glorifying things. //

So you agree that Vedic Sanskrit is different from Classical Sanskrit. Then how could MaxMuller or anyone write the meaning of Vedas with the knowledge of Panini grammar?

How could you say that Rik Vedas are hearsay when they continue in recitation even till today? There is inscriptional evidence to show that the five fold recital of Vedas was done in ancient Tamil nadu. The inscriptions of Cholan period in Tanjore talk about grants given to those who recited – samhitha, pada, karma, Ghana, jada are the five types of recitals about which we have inscriptional evidence in Tamil. All these are unwritten Vedas – where the focus is on recitals only.

Kings have glorified it. Cheran Senkuttuvan of Silappadhikara fame conducted Mudhu-kol Velvi (Soma yaaga) in his capital. Pal yhaaga saaali Mudukudumi did the yagas in countless number of times. Without reading sangam texts, don’t come here and blabber something that shows complete lack of knowledge of even sangam texts.

you cannot hide it from scrutiny and say that its best piece of work ever written.

If you want to gloat about it, let it stand the test of scrutiny.//

It is standing the test of time. If you don’t know even the abc of Vedas what can I do? If you want to scrutinise them, approach a Vedic pundit and learn from him. Then you can test it. You must be aware of Mr DA Joseph. He is a Christian who studied Vedantha from a competent Guru and is writing what he understood and analysed. His website is

The greatness of Vedas is that from time to time, even after deluge, Vedas are retrieved. As I told earlier, the eternal truths such as Gravity never get destroyed. They can be received again. If you have a doubt whether Vedas or Vedantha speak about gravity, they do. Read about it in my recent article in English here:-

      http://jayasreesaranathan.blogspot.in/2012/07/dark-matter-is-7th-wind-of-seven-wind.html

This article tells how Vedantha has talks about Dark matter too.

hmm. why other works like upanishads, thirukural, all other sanskrit literature didnt become a plaything of the colonials ?
      why only Rig veda ?

If you really care about Rig veda, you should let it stand the test of scrutiny and not hide it.//

Ask the colonials. The first Sanskrit text to be translated for the European consumption was Shankuntalam by Kalidasa. The Europeans were attracted by the theme and description of that story. When they came to India to explore other works, wherever they went they heard people telling that Vedas were the foremost which guided the people. So they wanted to read Vedas. When they read it, they found it absurd for they could not make out the meaning. Muller wrote:-
“The translation of the Veda will hereafter tell to a great extent on the fate of India and on the growth of millions of souls in that country. It is the root of their religion, and to show them what the root is, I feel sure, is the only way of uprooting all that has sprung from it during the last 3000 years”

Read 3rd and 4th article in the series. They mutilated Vedas for selfish purpose of destroying the culture of our country and replace it with Christianity. Even after they had left, people like you are continuing their task for what purpose - everyone knows. But I also know that it would not make you more intelligent, more refined or a better person by debasing Vedas

  7. For all the ones who dont reveal their identity due to fear or the desire to be in a safer side by not mentioning their names, I would like to tell them one thing. Kindly don't spread non-sense over here which is irritating like hell. If you think you can persuade us without showing authentic proofs from various sources as how she gives from ancient tamil literature and upanishads and epics, I feel really sorry for all you guys! Spread your dirt in other places, not here.. We will follow only our hindu sanathana dharma and it has been practised in Bharat for milleniums.

I feel so happy that someone like Ms. Jayashree Saranathan has been working a long way to tarnish the blunt picture the foreigners especially British have applied on us. Her contribution to young hindu generation is immeasurable. We have an enormous wealth of knowledge and wisdom which was not transferred to generations of hindu masses for centuries. Let this transition happen. Let us work on to bring up the new era of hindu renaissance with proper understanding and with all its core spiritual and human values! It does not mean from our side that we hate other religions. We accept all the Indians as our brothers & sisters but let us understand our true origin and follow the maximum good things as much as we can.

Taking out the bad things like untouchability and other anti-human diversities, let us practice the real good practices of Sanathana Dharma. Because for any society the change is inevitable. Under British rule, our forefathers had been treated like slaves and they suffered a lot to bring us a peaceful future. Let us not give out our true identity and individuality to someone who wants to dominate us by discretion.

    Thanks for the proper understanding!

  8. For all those who believe in converting people to other religion, you will fail here miserably. You can end up converting people who are illiterates, who dont want to realise their true origin & identity and who want to live a benefitting life out of scholarships, etc.

We dont have only one prophet or Messenger of God... We have plenty!! So it will be damn good, if you continue with your work than indulging in idiotic questions. Otherwise reveal your real names and religious background, so that we can understand you motto behind the questions. Dont turn us to be extremists! Let us maintain the siblinghood and befriend each other having a strong bonding on our mother land.

  10. From: http://www.yabaluri.org/TRIVENI/CDWEB/somethoughtsonthevedaanditsstudyjan78.htm
The Veda itself insists that understanding of its meaning is necessary for obtaining the full benefit from it. A Rigvedic passage says: “He who does not know that higher region of truth, what will he do with hymns? Only those who know attain the highest bliss”. (“Yastannaveda kimrica karishyati? Ya ittadvidusta ime samasate.” Rig Veda, I. 164. 39)
Another text says: “He who does not know the meaning hears but does not really hear, sees but does not really see, says but does not really understand what he says. But to those who know wisdom reveals itself as does a well-dressed wife to her husband”.
    “Utatvah pasyannadadarsa vaca mutattvah srunvan nasrunotyenam;
Utotvasmaitanvam visasre jayeva patya usati suvasah.” Rigveda. X. 71.4.
The Satapatha Brahmana (X. 5. 4.) clearly says that only when one has knowledge one can ascend to Heaven. The Nirukta has gone so far as to say that he who having learnt the Veda does not know its meaning is like a pillar which merely carries a burden, because only he who knows the meaning attains us the auspicious and the holy having got rid of all his sins through wisdom.
“Sthanurayambharaharah kilabhud adhityavedam na vijanoti yortham, Yorthajna itsakalam bhadramasnute nakameti jnana vidhuta papma.” Nirukta, I. 18.
The Brihaddevata also says: only he who knows (not merely recites) the hymns knows the gods; the deity does not accept the oblation offered without knowledge.
“Ya richo ha yo veda sa veda devan; aviynanapradishtam hi havirneheta daivatam.” Brihaddevata, VIII. 129, 133.

    1. Understanding the meaning of Vedas is not like understanding the meaning of the lines we write. You can understand what I wrote in the previous sentence. Understanding Vedas is not like that. Like Maxwell, Witzel has translated Rig Vedas and is going to bring it out. Read my blog on that in English, where expert opinion on how Vedas can not be translated and its meaning can not be understood like reading this comment.

      http://jayasreesaranathan.blogspot.in/2013/11/witzel-to-publish-translation-of-rig.html

In your comment itself the you have said, "A Rigvedic passage says: “He who does not know that higher region of truth, what will he do with hymns? Only those who know attain the highest bliss”. (“Yastannaveda kimrica karishyati? Ya ittadvidusta ime samasate.” Rig Veda, I. 164. 39)"

One must know the highest truth, This verse does not say that one comes to know of the highest truth by reading or translating the Vedas.
